McCarl's Preferred Services

Shawn McCarlBorn on June 4, 1961, in   Beaver Falls, PA, I am the youngest of four boys.   My father was the president of his own mechanical contracting business, McCarl's, Inc. located in Beaver Falls.   He started the business in 1947.

In 1979, I became a graduate of Blackhawk High School.   I studied mechanical engineering at Grove City College for a year and a-half before transferring to Youngstown State University where I spent two years in the mechanical engineering program.   I became a plumbing apprentice in 1981 and graduated from the training program in 1985.

In July of 1983, I married my high school sweetheart, Kim Guthrie.   Shortly thereafter she earned her B.S. Degree in Special Education from Indiana University of PA.   She worked as a teacher until giving birth to our first child, Christopher in April of 1987.   We also have two daughters, Janelle (February 1990) and Bethany (June 1997).   My family is the most treasured thing in my life.   I feel that I have been greatly blessed.

In my spare time, I enjoy spectating and participating in my children's activities.   I am currently the coach for my son's   baseball team.   I also participate in tennis and bowling leagues.   I enjoy playing golf when I am able to find the time.   For many years, I have collected sport cards, sport memorabilia and Thomas Kinkade art and collectibles.     My wife and I operated a sports card store out of the basement of our home in the late 1980's for a couple of years.   It was called "The Card Craze".   I still do some collecting as a hobby.

Our family regularly attends and maintains an active membership in the First United Methodist Church of Hollidaysburg, PA.    Kim is the children's choir director at our church.   Our faith is very important in our lives.   I am active with providing Pastoral support in assisting them with visions as well as participating on both the Youth Council and Pastoral Parish Relations committee.

I am currently active in our local community through memberships in the Blair County Chamber of Commerce, The Greater Altoona Economic Development Corp., AMCVB, Young Life and founding the Hollidaysburg Area Youth Football Association.

There have been many changes in my professional life through the years.   I like to think of them as positive changes.   I have grown and matured in many ways through my experiences.   I learned the mechanical contracting business by coming up through the trade.   As an administrator, I am able to see circumstances through the eyes of those in the field as well as from the vantage point of executives since I started as an apprentice in the plumbing field.

In 1984 I became a foreman and for the next three years worked as an estimator.   In 1987, I was a project manager and then a special project's manager in 1988.   From 1989-90 I was senior project manager on various projects, including the Pittsburgh International Airport.

From 1990-91 I served as assistant branch manager at McCarl's, Inc. in Altoona, PA.   I was being prepared for the managerial position of the branch office in Altoona while maintaining the office of Vice-President for McCarl's, Inc. from 1991-96.

Recently, I acquired my share of McCarl's, Inc. and spun-off the business to form my own mechanical contracting company.   I am now the President and sole-owner of S.P. McCarl & Company, Inc.    I have learned many valuable things from my co-workers, business associates, supporters and even my competitors over the years.

An important factor in my professional growth has been my involvement in the Mechanical Contracting Organization.   I am an active member in the Laurel Mechanical Contractor's Assn., serving as it's President and actively involved in the in the Mechanical Contractors Assn. of America.   I served on the National Plumbing Bureau as vice-chairman of that committee and currently serve on the Career Development Committee.   I am also a peer group member.    These affiliations have afforded me many educational opportunities and allowed me to share my expertise with others in order to enhance the quality of the mechanical contracting field.   They have also given me the opportunity to make acquaintances and friends with people who are involved in the same profession.   I am also a member of the Sheet Metal Contractor's Assn. of Central PA, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and the Blair County Builder's Association.   I maintain partnerships in various businesses unrelated to the mechanical contracting field as well.   They include:   McCarl's Process Systems, T-4 Technology, Mercury Recovery Services, SRM Holdings, LLC., McCarl's Services, LLC., and McCarls Preferred Services.

I have tried to improve upon my knowledge and skills in the areas of management, mechanical construction, business, computers, public relations, and personal relationships by my attendance and participation in various educational forums, which I have listed under the heading of "education" on my resume.   I believe that on-going education is vitally important for continued growth and success.

My wife and I are happily raising our three children in our home in Hollidaysburg, PA.   We purchased our first home in 1990 as it was being built and subsequently built our second and current home in 2000.   Our three children currently attend school in the Hollidaysburg School District area.   Since I started my own business, I plan to remain in this area for quite a while.
